“Without OYAP it wouldn’t happen. Children and young people with the most complex needs would miss out.”

The Care Matters Conference – Achieving your Dreams 2010 was held at St Gregory the Great School in Cowley, Oxford in August and was a great success.

Young people in care from all over Oxfordshire took part in workshops exploring issues important to them and giving information on the services available while they are in care and as they make the transition to independent adulthood.

The day was devised, developed and produced by the Children in Care Council with the support of OYAP Trust

Workshops ranged from volunteering opportunities, rights for young people, sexual health, housing, to healthy relationships, drugs and alcohol and education. Artists helped the delegates explore these themes in creative ways using song writing, street theatre, dance, photography, forum theatre and visual arts. There was even a catwalk show from a group who had worked together in a project funded by the Have a Heart Foundation in the weeks leading up to the event. They designed a recycled fashion collection, created catwalk music and choreographed the whole show.

The conference even appeared on BBC Oxford who interviewed some of the young people in the workshops they chose to take part in. Everybody had a great time taking part in activities and having meaningful discussions with each other. Delegates left at the end of the day feeling inspired to achieve their dreams and with a better understanding of the services available to them.

We would like to thank everybody that took part; as it was an inspirational day and we are looking forward to next year!

OYAP Trust, (formerly Oxfordshire Youth Arts Partnership), is the Youth Arts development charity for Oxfordshire and specialises in working with young people at risk.

Young people are inherently creative; we support young people to use their creativity as a catalyst for change in their own lives and in their communities.

We believe all young people, especially those most isolated, vulnerable and at risk, should have the opportunity to learn, grow and have fun through artistic expression.

To make this happen we:

• go where other agencies and charities do not
• seek out people who would not otherwise participate in creative activities
• create partnerships that best support young people.

In these tricky financial times our traditional sources of income are drying just when we are inundated by requests from partners and young people to increase our provision. If you would like to support OYAP Trust you can now donate online or talk to us about how you can get involved.
